Cairns Libraries
Cairns Libraries are a contributor to Picture Queensland.
Cairns Regional Council is committed to managing growth, creating prosperity and enhancing our lifestyle by making our region a premier tourism destination and the nation's most liveable community. Cairns Libraries is the premier library service in tropical North Queensland. The aim of Cairns Libraries is to build and enrich community capacity through professional knowledge and information management, the provision of access to global information and resources in all formats for the Region, in a manner that promotes and supports quality lifestyle, leisure choices, cultural opportunities and lifelong learning. Cairns Libraries has nine branches located at Babinda, Cairns City, Earlville, Edmonton, Gordonvale, Manunda, Mossman, Smithfield and Stratford. Cairns Libraries serve approximately 109,000 members with a comprehensive library service.
Cairns Libraries houses a comprehensive Regional Resource collection which focuses on materials from and pertaining to the Cairns region reaching as far north as Papua New Guinea. The historic reference room, which was the original Cairns City Council Chambers, also houses an extensive collection of books, microfilm/microfiche and CD Roms to assist with genealogy research. Many family history researchers have found this collection to be the best north of Brisbane. Integral to the Regional Resource collection is the region’s only source of microfilms of the local newspaper, the Cairns Post dating back to the late 19th century.
