Northern Territory Library
Territory Images, the Northern Territory Library and Information Service's collection of historical and contemporary photographs, is held at the Northern Territory Library, Parliament House, Darwin. Territory Images contains over 120,000 photographic images illustrating life in the Northern Territory from the 1870s through to the present day.
Over 28,000 images have been digitised and are available online through Territory Images. An additional 35,000 images have been digitised, but are only available onsite at the Northern Territory Library through the Library's Intranet.
Territory Images traces its origins to the early 1980s in the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy, when the newly formed State Reference Library of the Northern Territory began collecting photographs of the Territory. Territory Images has grown to its present day size through both donation and purchase, and owes its considerable coverage of the early years of the Northern Territory to the generosity of private donors throughout Australia.
Territory Images provides broad coverage of all subjects relating to the Northern Territory and its people. Of particular note are collections of images relating to the early days of Darwin, Indigenous people of the Northern Territory, early Aboriginal contact with Europeans, the Northern Territory Chinese community, World War 2, the pastoral industry, mining, railways, and the Northern Territory in the 1950s and 1960s.
Higher quality copies of images are available as email attachments, on CD-Rom or as digital prints. Information on prices and ordering can be found on the Territory Images web site.
Reference enquiries, requests for information, comments and other communications can be emailed via the Territory Images web site, or directly to the Northern Territory Library through the Online Reference Service.
