Public Record Office Victoria

Public Record Office Victoria looks after several large image collections from a variety of Victorian Government agencies, including the Public Transport Corporation (around 500,000 images), State Electricity Commission, Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works and the Melbourne Harbour Trust.  A century of photography from these organisations has resulted in a detailed record of people, places and objects and the natural and built environments of Victoria. These are a rich resource for social history.

Our contribution to Picture Australia is approximately 7,500 images initially, including:

  • 4500 images from the former Public Transport Corporation collection, covering the whole of Victoria;
  • our collection of images from the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne;
  • several portraits of Ned Kelly.

As well as the digitised photographs available through Picture Australia, PROV has an extensive program that places digitised documents online; allowing access to first-hand accounts of significant events in Australian history such as the Eureka Stockade.
