University of Melbourne Archives

The University of Melbourne Archives was established in July 1960, initially to collect and preserve records relating to the University and business and business people for the purposes of historical research. The University's own records date from its foundation in 1853 and includes administrative records, records of student societies and the personal papers of many former academic staff.

From 1973 the Archives began to collect trade union and other labour history material, more than 100 trade unions now being represented in the Archives' collections. During the same period, the Archives also began to collect records of professional, community, women's, peace and political organizations.

UMAIC is the online image catalogue of the University of Melbourne Archives. Launched in November 2001, the aim, subject to copyright, is to eventually make all of the photographs and images in the collections available online

The largest collection currently available on UMAIC is the University of Melbourne photograph collection with over 1400 images that capture the evolving landscape and architecture of the University as well as ceremonies, celebrations and many past staff.

UMAIC also includes 1,000 selected images from the John Ellis Photograph Collection of Peace and Protest Movements in Melbourne (1971-1996). Ellis took these photographs during his participation in the same events and many of the images are accompanied by his own descriptions of the events and people. Chronicling the Anti-Vietnam War Moratorium, anti-nuclear rallies, Communist Party and trade union events, protest marches and the political figures who attended, John Ellis has documented an important part of Australia's social and political history.

UMAIC is a work in progress with images being added continually. For further information about UMAIC and the University of Melbourne Archives contact:
