Copyright FAQs

Can I copy an image?

All images from the web site may be reproduced for research or study purposes. Please note that this does not include reproduction of this material on the Internet. You should always attribute an image - that is, provide details of the creator, title and owning agency with the image. The agencies participating in Picture Australia will be very happy to advise you.

For example:
You can use an image in a school project, or while researching a family history but you cannot put it on your personal web site (which is a form of publishing) or reproduce it in a book or newsletter without checking if there are any copyright restrictions and receiving approval from the relevant contributors.

What will happen if I don't ask for permission?

Any uses over and above this may be infringements of copyright and the copyright owner will be able to take legal action against you. Check with the relevant agency if you are unsure about the requirements.

Copyright for Flickr images?
